Brain Food Triggers Positive Thinking

Unleash the Power of Positive Thinking by Eating Healthy

Virginia Woolf once wrote, “one cannot think well, love well or sleep well if one hasn’t dined well.” The foods we eat directly affect how our brain performs. By eating the right kinds of food, IQ is boosted and mood is improved. The individual is also more emotionally stable and the memory is more sharp and the mind young.

By giving the brain the right nutrients, one can think faster and have better memories. This will make you more balanced and coordinated especially at times when full concentration is required.

Protein

Protein can be found in fish, milk, cheese and meat. It provides the body the building blocks it needs to regenerate the tissues, internal organs (heart and brain) and nerves. Proteins are also used to make the neurotransmitters improve the mental performance of the brain.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are responsible for enhancing the absorption of the tryptophan which is turned into serotonin when it enters the brain. About thirty minutes after eating food containing carbohydrates, the individual is more relaxed and calm. This effect lasts for several hours. Food containing carbohydrates are fruits, vegetables and grain. Digesting carbohydrates result in the breaking down of this nutrient into glucose which becomes sugar. This is the brain’s primary energy source. If the glucose level fluctuates too much, then the individual experiences dizziness, mental confusion, loss of consciousness and even severe convulsions.

Fat

The brain is composed of 60% fat because brain cells contain myelin sheath which is 75% fat. Fats are messengers because they regulate the blood circulation and immune system. This affects the mood and the memory of the individual. Omega 3 fatty acids are important to the over-all brain performance. Lack of fat leads to poor memory, depression, learning disabilities, ADD, low IQ, dyslexia and other mental disorders. Salmon, trout, herring, sardines, tuna, anchovies and mackerel contain fats.

Vitamins and Minerals

These are important for the functioning and growth of the brain. B Vitamins are important because they have a vital role in the production of energy. Vitamins A, C, as well as E are antioxidants and preserve the memory for older people. Minerals are important to the brain’s function and performance. Manganese and magnesium are required by the brain energy. Potassium, Calcium and Sodium are crucial in the brain’s thinking process because these facilitate the relaying of messages from the sensory nerves to the brain.

Water

The blood is composed of 83% water. It also acts as the messenger of the nutrients into the brain. It eliminates the toxins in the body as well. The brain has to be fully hydrated so that the circulation of the blood goes well. Water is important for mental alertness. Research shows that people are partially dehydrated because they do not take in the required dosage of water on a daily basis which is 8 glasses. If that is the case, the brain works below its full potential and capacity.

Are retail health clinics the healthcare model of the future?

Are we ready for fast food health clinics? The debate rages on….

The biggest mover in this market is CVS, who recently acquired Minute Clinics and plans to open 300 Minute CLinics in 2007. Most recently, CVS has come under fire in Boston from physicians and others in the healthcare communtiy. How will these retail health clinics impact medical practice or patient outcomes?

If you visit the Minute Clinic website you will see the following claims?

We’re doing what we can to make healthcare a little easier for people with a lot going on.
Our board-certified practitioners are trained to diagnose and treat common family illnesses,
such as strep throat, bronchitis and ear, eye and sinus infections.

No appointment necessary
Open 7 days a week
Most insurance accepted

I think most people would find this appealing. If you have been to an emergency room lately you know that wait time is hit or miss, you are going to fill out reams of paperwork and you may have to drive a fair distance to get there. Operations like Minute Clinics try to address these issues and may just pull it off. COnvenience is the driving factor here - no one wants to wait anymore, and given the choice between driving 20 miles versus 5 miles to get the same care delivered by a qualified nurse practitioner - the closer facility wins every time.

Think about it for a minute - people will end using these clinics to treat minor healthcare problems things like: sinus infection, ear infection, strep throat checking, cough, minor upper respritory issues, poison ivy and pink eye. . The likelihood that people will use Minute CLinics for long term care is slim - for those types of illnesses people will opt for the trusted reliable and physiscian or specialist. The kicker in the convenience category is that these Minute Clinics will be located in or next to the local CVS - one-stop healthcare shopping.

Think about this scenario - Feel like you might be getting pink eye? - Drive 5 minutes to the local CVS, go in to the Minute CLinic, get diagnosed with pink eye, step next door or down the next aisle and get your prescription filled. The ultimate in healthcare convenience.

I personally see these types of healthcare clinics supplementing, NOT replacing a pateints ongoing relationship with their physician or primary care provider. Will these clinics cut down on the overuse and abuse of patients unecessarily visiting Emergency Rooms?

This is entirely possible and probable if these types of clinics catch on. In today’s world - convenience rules and my guess is that this is the not the last we will hear about Minute Clinics.

Have a Safe Workout - Warm Up First!

It is starting to become warmer, and many people will be returning to their fitness routines. Most sports injuries that happen when a person works out are caused due to a lack of proper warm up and stretching of the muscles before a workout.

It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is definitely the case when you start to workout or do your fitness routine. Sore muscles, sprains, and even broken bones can result from not warming up your body prior to conditioning.

The best medicine for saving yourself the agony of ‘the morning after syndrome’ is to properly stretch out before your workout and then to warm up by doing some light jogging. You can use an ipod and listen to music, or take a friend with you for company.

Start by doing a simple stretching exercise. First, stand with your feet shoulder length apart. Reach down as far as you can with both hands and try to touch the floor. Don’t jerk, but simply extend your arms to the floor slowly and hold that position until you feel slight pressure on your leg and back muscles. Repeat this 5 times.

Have you ever met a person that seems like they just cannot find their niche in life? It seems like everyone knows someone that tends to wander through their life searching for the perfect job or the perfect mate. My younger sister was like this. She was always searching for something better than what she had. No matter what job she was doing she was looking for something better to come along.

My sister was in and out of more relationships than I could keep track of. It was a chore for the rest of the family to try to remember the names of the dates that she brought around. My brother called several of her dates by the wrong name. I never bothered learning her work number because it seemed to change every few months. She started moving to different apartments also. My mother confided in me that she and dad were really concerned that their baby daughter was not able to find her niche. One day my sister called me and announced that she was going to start selling real estate. I asked her if she did not need to be licensed to do this. She told me that she had been working on getting her license for several months and that she recently got it. She was going to be selling real estate for a major company. She was very excited about this new opportunity. Even though she had been through multiple jobs I could tell that this time seemed to be different for her.

Several months after my sister started selling real estate I called her to have lunch together. We met at one of our favorite restaurants. She told me that for the first time in her life she was satisfied with a job. She was not looking for something else because she could do so many things selling real estate. She could list commercial properties as well as multiple family dwellings and single family dwellings. Some of her listings were small modest homes in small towns and others were multi-million dollar mansions in the country. She was learning more about land values so that she could start listing building sights and hunting parcels. She had started dating a contractor that was in charge of a development where she had several homes listed. She shared with me that she had never felt this way about someone before and she thought he was the mate she had been looking for. It took her several years but it seems that selling real estate was the niche my sister needed to find. My parents are thrilled that she is finally at peace with her life.
